Dr. Shalonda Crawford

Born and raised in Grand Rapids, Michigan, Dr. Shalonda Crawford continues to defy
odds. After becoming pregnant and giving birth at the age of 15, despite enormous
mountains and valleys, victories and defeats, her will and determination to graduate high
school on time would be one of many hurdles for the young mom. The challenge would
propel her to study hard and stay focused while juggling the overwhelming responsibility
of motherhood. And she did it! She graduated on time and proudly marched in her cap and
gown with her own graduating high school class.

After high school, Dr. Crawford spent several years
working in entertainment as a back-up singer, solo artist
and a music journalist. Finding little fulfillment in those
areas, Dr. Crawford decided to take on a few part-time and
volunteer jobs working to assist youth, young mothers and
underprivileged individuals struggling to make their way
back into the mainstream of life, something she was all too
familiar with having been a teen mother. It was there where
she experienced her highest level of compassion and met
head on with her purpose.
Always committed to doing her best, Dr. Crawford
immediately enrolled in college where she earned 2
Associate degrees in Management and Business from
Davenport University, a Bachelors degree in Business
Administration from the University of Phoenix, 2 Master’s
degrees in Psychology from The Chicago School of Professional Psychology and also in
Theology and Ministry from Fuller Theological Seminary, before going on to complete her
Doctoral degree in Applied Clinical Psychology at The Chicago School of Professional
Psychology. All the while, Dr. Crawford stayed busy in the church and throughout the
community, helping single mothers and families in distress with finding housing and other
resources and many times, she was that resource. Understanding the need for people to be
heard, she would often times just lend her ear and shoulder of compassion.
Today, Dr. Crawford is a licensed psychologist and the Clinic Manager at a community
mental health clinic in downtown Los Angeles. She has worked with women as a therapist
in the Los Angeles County Century Regional Detention Center, downtown at Men’s
Central/Twin Towers jail and other local institutions throughout Los Angeles. She has
worked with children and their families, as well as with adults who are managing various
mental illnesses while making their way back into the workplace. She is also a spiritual
advisor/counselor who is working to eradicate the stigma associated with Christians
seeking counseling for various mental health conditions including chronic depression,
anxiety, abuse and trauma.

Her concern for the health and wellbeing of others and the integration of psychotherapy
and spirituality goes beyond those realms to include physical health as well. Dr. Crawford
is the co-chair for the First Ladies Health Initiative providing free health screening and
resources to those in communities disproportionately affected throughout the Los Angeles
area. She is currently a committee member of Aids Healthcare Foundation’s BLACC Faith
division where she has accepted the responsibility of raising awareness to the rise of new
HIV/AIDS cases in the community. She speaks on behalf of the foundation to encourage
testing, prevention and treatment for those directly and indirectly infected.
Dr. Crawford is a wife, a mother (of 6), and co-pastor alongside her husband, Pastor Shep
Crawford of The Experience Christian Ministries (ECM), a progressive and fast-growing
church located in South Los Angeles. She is also the founder of “Women Breaking Free”
a popular annual women’s conference in Los Angeles now in its 6th year.
Dr. Crawford’s vast and broad experience providing counseling and guidance for a widely
diverse clientele has made her one of the most sought-after psychologists of our time.
